I can find the UBF8.. folder, but there is no subfolder called 'FontCache'. Free adobe reader for mac.

The Adobe Garamond and Caslon fonts were in my system before installing Mac office 2011 or 2016. Maybe they were installed automatically by Adobe Acrobat pro. I think I tried to uninstall and reinstall them, but that didn't fix the issue.

That's exactly the word I'm looking for: 'synthetic bold'! The bold style is applied, but not the actual Adobe Caslon Bold included in the font book.

Yup, the problem happens in all office apps. I have tested PowerPoint and Excel, both of which were affected.
In fact, the Office font menu always includes the correct, non-synthetic 'bold', but I'm unable to select and apply it to any highlighted text:
