Whenever I get a chance to show Acrobat X in person, the first thing I do is show how to customize the interface.
If you’ve used Acrobat X for some time, you probably have already discovered how to use QuickTools to add your favorite functions to the toolbar. I wrote about this previously in my article Quick Access to Frequently Used Stamps.

Click the Creative Cloud icon, located in the taskbar (Windows) or Apple menu bar (Mac OS), to open the Creative Cloud desktop app.If it’s not already selected, click the Apps tab at the top of the window. Adobe CC Tilt Iconset by Ziggy19 (16 icons). On the Adobe Design Brand team, we create branding for all of our desktop, mobile, and web products. A branded element can be anything from the two-letter product logos you see on your dock to the.
Another area of Acrobat that may be customized are the Common Tools. The Common Tools include all of the page navigation and other tools:
In this article, I’ll show you how to customize Acrobat’s Common Tools and answer these questions:
- How do I show the First Page and Last Page buttons on my Acrobat X toolbar?
- Where did the Previous View and Next View buttons go?
- How do I add the Find tool to Reader or Acrobat?
- Where is the Magnifying Glass (Zoom) tool in Acrobat X?
Enjoy!
Just a Right Click Away . . .
The Common Toolbar is customized using a menu.
The easiest way to access the menu is to hover over the Common Toolbar, and right-click (Command-Click on the Mac):
Each of the top menus (Rotate View, Page Navigation, Page Display, Select & Zoom, File, Edit) control which icons will appear on the toolbar.
Page Navigation Tools
By default, the Page Navigation toolbar includes a Previous Page and Next Page tool:
Hidden in this section are several other very useful tools which I always enable:
Hidden in this section are several other very useful tools which I always enable:
These extra tools such as the First Page, Last Page and Previous and Next View buttons allow you to more quickly move between pages and views.
To enable all of these tools, follow the illustration below:
Page Display Tools
I rarely change the defaults here, but I will describe Acrobat’s default behavior which, I think, is interesting.
In most cases, Acrobat behaves perfectly. For example, when you are looking at a letter-size page full width, scrolling is continuous as in your word processing program. However, when you are looking at an entire page, Acrobat snaps scrolling from page to page.
Of course, you have options . . . if you want scroll documents in Fit Page mode, you certainly can. Want to try some of these different options?
- Right-click on the Common Toolbar
- Choose Page Display
- Choose Show all Page Display Tools
You can always choose the Reset option for the Page Display toolbar if you don’t like the results.
Select and Zoom Tools
![Icons Icons](/uploads/1/2/4/7/124717633/742054625.jpg)
Zoom in, Zoom out . . . these are operations you may do frequently in Acrobat, so it makes sense to put tools up front where you can find them.
I like to enable the Marquee Zoom tool, also known as the Magnifying Glass tool.
The Marquee Zoom tool allows you to draw a rectangle surrounding the area in which you are interested, then have the screen zoom in to just the area selected.
You can also click once on the Marquee Zoom tool on the page and Acrobat will zoom in via 25% increments. Hold down CTRL and click to zoom out in 25% increments.
To add in the Marquee Zoom tool:
- Right-click on the Common Toolbar
- Choose Select and Zoom
- Enable the Marquee Zoom tool
File Menu Tools
By default, all of the File Menu tools are on in Acrobat and you probably won’t want to change them. These tools are:
New Mac Dock Stop Adding Icons
- Open
- Save
- Share
One note about Share . . . by default, Acrobat is configured to use the Share Pane so you can quickly send documents via Adobe’s SendNow Service which is a convenient way to send large files. As good as SendNow is, I don’t use it nearly as much as good old email.
To tell Acrobat not to use the Share Pane, choose Edit>Preferences and go to the Online section. Once there, turn off “Use Share Pane when sending Email Attachment”.
Edit Menu Tools
The Common Toolbar Edit tools in Acrobat offer quick access to three tools which are not on by default, but that you may find very helpful.
- Take SnapshotThe Snapshot Tool captures to the clipboard either:
– The visible portion of a PDF page
– Part of a PDF pageI’ve written about the Snapshot Tool previously in my article Adding a Thumbnail of a PDF Page to a PowerPoint presentation. - Find (CTRL-F)
Search for single instances of a word in a PDF - Advanced Search (CTRL-Shift-F)
Find and display all of instances of a word in PDF. Very useful for case analysis.
Of these three, I only turn on the Snapshot tool by default since it doesn’t have a keyboard equivalent. Adobe acrobat pdf for mac free download.
Still, I’ve heard from many legal pros that simply – must – have – Find – on – the – toolbar.
I hear you! Here’s how to add the Find tool to the Acrobat toolbar:
- Right-click on the Common Toolbar
- Choose Edit
- Enable the Find tool
In the screen shot below, I’ve marked Take Snapshot (A) and Find (B):
Oops! How do I set it all back to the defaults?
Acrobat allows you to quickly and easily reset:
- An Individual toolbar
- All of the Common tools
Right-click on the Common toolbar, then choose any of the toolbar sections.
For example, to reset all of your Common tools, Select (A).
To resent only the Select and Zoom tools, Select (B).

How do I stop the Adobe Creative Cloud app from auto-launching on login? I don't see any option of stopping this, and for some reason it's not in OS X's user login options.

It is loaded by default by
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.adobe.AdobeCreativeCloud.plist
. If you run
that will disable it for your user.

To turn off everything Adobe launches at startup on the Mac you need to both disable its launchd jobs and the Adobe Core Sync extension.
For the Adobe Core Sync extension, it is a Finder Sync extension so you can disable it under
System Preferences
→ Extensions
as described in this answer - https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/237585/23876. From what I have seen, you will need to repeat this step after each Adobe Creative Cloud upgrade. For the launchd jobs, read on. Note that the following will also disable Adobe automatic update checking. So you will need to check for updates from inside one of the Adobe apps or explicitly run Adobe Create Cloud.
Adobe actually puts their launchd job definitions in several places and those places change depending on the Adobe version. Building on @Alan Shutko’s answer, the following will disable them everywhere. You can ignore any “Could not find specified service” warnings. After running, reboot to enjoy an Adobe free launch (until you actually run an Adobe product).
As background,
launchctl unload -w
disables each service in the override database. launchd will follow the override database entry even if the job definition (e.g. /Library/LaunchAgents/com.adobe.AdobeCreativeCloud.plist
) is marked as enabled. The override database is on a per user basis. LaunchDaemon jobs are run as root so we use sudo
to disable them for the root user. From what I have seen so far, Adobe installs do not update the override database, so you shouldn't need to run the commands again after an Adobe install (unless they introduce another job). Please comment if someone does see Adobe touching the override database.
For more information on launchd, the launchd Tutorial is a great overview on
studgeekstudgeeklaunchd
jobs. And LaunchControl is a good tool for working with launchd jobs. LaunchControl is a paid app, but the trial version supports viewing them. Be sure to enable tooltips so you can see the override database values. 1,82022 gold badges2121 silver badges2828 bronze badges
I'm currently using this set of commands—the wildcard answer will be a bit more future-proof if Adobe adds more services, but:
- Apple is shifting to having these services embedded inside app bundles, so new services added by Adobe may not appear in the usual
/Library/Launch*/
paths but still have the same infuriating launch-at-login behavior and - this answer lets you target a single user (if you have multiple users on your machine) for the Creative Cloud UI and sync daemon, should you wish to leave them in place for another person.
